Police Commissioner Owen Ellington says he's not satisfied with the 15 per cent reduction in murders recorded so far this year in Jamaica. Police statistics released earlier this week indicate the overall drop in criminal activities this year over last year. Figures for January 1 to December 26 this year show that there were 1,409 murders. The murder figures up to December 26 mean that there were 244 fewer homicides over the period compared with that of last year. But Commissioner Ellington says more needs to be done to significantly reduce crimes. Commissioner Ellington says national strategies are being developed to address issues of major concern to the police. The issues include gangs, extortion, visitor security, traffic and praedial larceny. While the murder rate has dropped there are concerns about the number of killings by the police this year. Latest figures indicate that since January more than 300 people have been killed in alleged confrontations with the police. Commissioner Ellington says it is the result of violent attacks on agents of the state by criminals.
