Road safety authorities are to meet this afternoon to plan initiatives for ensuring a safe traffic environment for Jamaicans in 2011. The meeting is to be held at the office of the Road Safety Unit and will involve personnel from the Unit, the National Road Safety Council, the transport ministry and the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF). Director of the Road Safety Unit, Kanute Hare, says key agenda items include pedestrian safety, enforcement of the Road Safety Act and improved infrastructure. Hare says the Unit will be pushing for Jamaica to import more vehicles that are equipped with safety mechanisms such as airbags. He says greater effort will also be made to step up public education campaigns dealing with road safety.
