The plight of mentally ill persons who run afoul of Jamaica's laws was again brought to the fore in the Linstead Resident Magistrate's Court in St Catherine on Wednesday. Anthony Davis, 51, who is mentally challenged, faced the court for the third time to answer to a charge of felonious wounding, after he was accused of chopping another man, seriously wounding him.The court was told that in March last year the complainant, a 51-year old man, and his cousin went to Mr. Davis' house in Freedom, rural St. Catherine, in relation to a vehicle which had been damaged.Mr. Davis reportedly chopped the man repeatedly all over his body resulting in him being partially disabled and hospitalised for several months andAt his first court appearance early last year, Mr. Davis, who also resides in Freedom, was offered $150,000 bail but no-one came forward to stand surety for his bail conditions. When he faced the court again in December the bail amount was reduced to $70,000 but still no-one posted bail for him.The mentally challenged man again faced the Linstead RM Court on Wednesday where his case was expected to be heard. However the complainant was unable to give evidence due to his injuries. The case was then postponed until February 28.While the bail offer still stands, Mr. Davis remains in the Linstead Police Lock up as again, no one has turned up to stand surety.
