A Jamaican man, who illegally re-entered the United States after being deported, has been sentenced to four and a half years in a federal prison in Florida. Ronald Smith, 51, was sentenced following an investigation by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Homeland Security, the Florida Highway Patrol and the Social Security Administration.The Jamaican was convicted of false impersonation of a US citizen, falsely representing a social security number, aggravated identity theft and illegal re-entry after deportation.According to court documents, Smith was deported in 2003 after numerous criminal convictions, including possession with intent to distribute cocaine and possession of a firearm.He returned to the US unlawfully and then used the identity of a US citizen to obtain a state of Florida driver's licence, work in the US illegally, attain medical care and avoid detection from federal and state authorities for several years.Smith will be sent back to Jamaica after he serves his sentence.
