The St. Catherine Parish Council says it raked in over $2.5 million in revenue through the enforcement of parking regulations in 2010. Mayor of Spanish Town, Dr. Andrew Wheatley, says this resulted from intense vigilance, which will continue in the new year. But he has indicated that the system will be upgraded this year. He says the Council will be engaging more vendors to sell the parking tickets to ensure they are more accessible. The Permit Parking System was introduced by the Council in 2008 in a move to regulate parking and ease traffic congestion in the old capital. Under the system, motorists are authorised to park on designated streets in the town, between certain hours, at a cost of $50 per hour or $3,500 per month. Persons who park in designated areas without displaying their permits run the risk of having their vehicles clamped, attracting a penalty of $2,500.
