Many Haitians in the Dominican Republic were in hiding at the weekend or staying in their homes after Dominican authorities announced an immigration crackdown fuelled by cholera fears. Soldiers and immigration officials have been setting up surprise checkpoints after the authorities in Santo Domingo said they were resuming deportation of illegal Haitian immigrants.Those deportations were stopped following the devastating earthquake that struck Haiti a year ago.Rights groups, including Amnesty, International have denounced the resumption of what they called the mass deportation of Haitian migrants.An Amnesty official said that with Haiti still recovering from a devastating natural disaster, its Dominican neighbour should be stepping up efforts to help Haiti and its people.
