State agencies are racing against time to get new parking facilities in downtown Kingston ready to meet Saturday's planned changes to the public-transport arrangements. This week several men and women were seen working feverishly on the new transport centre at Water Lane.It was a similar story at the nearby taxi parking facility while workmen laboured at the new bus park on Pechon Street.Officials of the Urban Development Corporation (UDC), the Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC), the Transport Authority and the Kingston and St. Andrew Corporation (KSAC) visited the facilities and expressed confidence that they would be ready for business come Saturday. Not even a neck brace could stop Mayor of Kingston Desmond McKenzie from taking a first-hand look at the work.He told The Gleaner that while all the renovations would not be done on the Pechon Street facility, which is to house JUTC sub-franchise operators, it will be open for business by Saturday."We will be ready in terms of the grounds because we are going to be paving the entire area. The bathrooms will be ready but the renovation that is taking place will be on a phased basis," McKenzie said."We are not only going to be fixing the grounds, we are going to be changing the entire cover of the transportation centre, putting in some new stalls for vendors and doing a comprehensive overhaul," he added. Proper transport systemAccording to the mayor, members of the public will find a proper transport system in place when the changes are complete."I am satisfied because we are all working together. The KSAC and the UDC have met with the transport operators and we have listened to their concerns and responded to the issues they have raised."McKenzie told The Gleaner that police posts will be established at the Pechon Street and Water Lane transport facilities while the Darling Street Police Station, which was destroyed by thugs last May, would be repaired and ready in a matter of weeks.Under the new rules to take effect on Saturday, buses and taxis have been assigned designated areas to pick up and drop off passengers at the new or renovated transport centres.
