Traffic came to a screeching halt on the busy Spanish Town Bypass in St. Catherine on Monday afternoon following a blazing gun battle between police and heavily armed gunmen. The incident happened in the lunch time rush hour.RJR News understands that motorists scampered for cover after a man who was travelling in a vehicle was shot dead in the crossfire.He has been identified as Jermaine Walker from an address in Westmoreland.According to reports, about 12:30, Walker was in a van which was transporting members of the Morman church to an undisclosed location.It is understood that the church members came upon the shootout between the gunmen and members of a police party along Spanish Town Road in the vicinity of Dela Vega City.The back glass of the vehicle in which Mr. Walker was travelling was reportedly shattered as a result of the ensuing gunfire.And it was later discovered that he had been shot.Mr. Walker was rushed to the Spanish Town Hospital where he was pronounced dead.The shooting led the police to cordon off a section of the by-pass, in the vicinity of March Pen Road.Traffic was also diverted to Portmore or through Spanish Town.Up to late Monday afternoon, the police were still searching for the alleged gunmen who reportedly escaped in their motor car.It is not known whether any of them was hit in the shooting.
