Democratic Labour Party candidate Mara Thompson has won Thursday's by election in the St John constituency in Barbados. Mrs Thompson now holds the seat that had been left vacant by the death of her husband, the late prime minister, David Thompson.She got just over 4600 votes to the 553 polled by her rival Hudson Griffith of the opposition Barbados Labour Party.It was an historic victory - the first time that the widow of a Barbados MP had replaced her husband as constituency parliamenatry representative.Opposition Leader Owen Arthur, who had focused on the nationality of St Lucian-born Mrs Thompson during the lead-up to the by election, has congratulated her.
