Belinda Williams (right), manager NCB Corporate Communications, happily signs a symbolic cheque valued at $244,288 as part of her company's donation to athletes of the Jamaica Paralympic team (from left) Alphanso Cunningham; Sylvia Grant; Neville Sinclair, coach of the Jamaica Paralympic team and Tanto Campbell (standing). The donations geared towards offsetting expenses for their participation in the IPC World Athletics Championships in Christchurch, New Zealand from January 21 through 30. Sharing in the occasion are (from left) Jefferson Davis, coach Jamaica Paralympic team, Major General Robert Neish, president Jamaica Paralympic Association and Christopher Samuda, team manager. However, despite the donation, the Paralympic team's participation is still in doubt as according to the Jamaica Paralympic Association's secretary general Suzanne Harris-Henry, this latest donation is timely, but the association is still $1.6 million short of the $3-million budget for the Championships. To date Supreme Ventures is the only other company to have lent support with $250,000, while Harris-Henry indicated that the Sports Development Foundation has promised $1 million, which is yet to be received. She told the Observer that at this moment, the team will not be travelling to New Zealand, unless the shortfall is met by today, as tomorrow represents the last day for the team to depart to have any chance of participating in the Championships. The three Jamaica Paralympic Association athletes -- who had been preparing to compete -- should have left the island on January 14. They are: Campbell, World Record holder and 2004 and 2008 Paralympic Bronze medallist in discus class F56; Alphanso Cunningham, the current Pan American record holder in the discus and javelin F53 and former World Record holder in the discus, as well as Sylvia Grant, six-time Paralympian in discus and javelin class F57. The late cancellation by the Jamaican team will incur financial penalties and will also deny the athletes an opportunity at an excellent chance to medal at the prestigious Games," said Harris-Henry.http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fb...72226066153956
