Normality is returning to the petroleum retail sector on Tuesday morning following the decision by more than 200 unionised tanker drivers to end their strike.Following a four hour meeting at the Ministry of Labour Monday it was agreed that the drivers would resume duties on Tuesday morning.The drivers stopped working Monday morning to protest against the failure of haulage contractors to abide by an agreement reached last year for a salary increase.As part of the back to work settlement, the haulage contractors must begin paying new rates to the drivers by February 16.President of the National Workers Union, NWU, Vincent Morrison told RJR News on Tuesday morning that a meeting with the truckers just ended with them agreeing to the back to work formula.Mr. Morrison says marketing and haulage contractors will now meet and formulate an agreement which will be communicated to Labour Minister Pearnel Charles. Outstanding issuesAnd the haulage contractors will be meeting with petroleum marketing companies this week to iron out outstanding issues concerning rates.This will enable the contractors to honour payments due to the tanker drivers."Yes, throughout the next four days we will be meeting with respective marketing companies to conclude on rates as well as retroactive payments that are owed to the drivers," said Clive Wiggan, President-designate of the Petroleum Haulage Contractors Association.
