Sugar prices jumped to 30-year highs on Wednesday, following recent hikes in the price of wheat, corn, soybean, livestock, rice, coffee, and cocoa. Christopher Levy, Chief Executive Officer of the Jamaica Broilers, says already the impact is being felt in Jamaica because of the increased interconnectedness of the economy and global events."Chicken prices have gone up since the start of the year ... they went up by about 2.5% a week and a half ago. We're trying to work through what will happen between February and March if the price of grain continues to increase," he said.According to Mr. Levy, at the moment, chicken price increases are almost reflecting hikes in the price of grain, which means prices are now changing as soon as corn shipments are received.The price of other meats has been going up as well, as higher-priced grains force up the cost of animal feed.
