A special team of police investigators was last night on the trail of a group of gunmen who escaped with at least $62 million after robbing three security guards on the busy thoroughfare of East Road, St Andrew, yesterday morning. "We are hoping to make a breakthrough soon," Senior Superintendent Wilford Gayle told The Gleaner.Up to news time last night, Deputy Superintendent Michael Hugh Phipps, the Area Four crime officer, said the security guards were being interviewed by detectives probing the daring daylight robbery.According to police reports, the guards were transporting the money for distribution to various banks in the Corporate Area.While travelling along East Road, off Hagley Park Road, they stopped to allow other vehicles to pass. A blue Honda motor car collided with the Suzuki Liana the guards were in and the two men and one woman, contracted to a prominent Kingston security firm, got out of their vehicle to assess the damage.The guards were surprised by three men who got out of the Honda motor car and held them up at gunpoint. The police said the gunmen also took a .38 Smith & Wesson revolver, serial number BHJ3266, and 12 rounds of ammunition.The Suzuki Liana was later recovered on Greenwich Street, Kingston 12, without the money."We are now processing the car," said Phipps.
