INFORMATION minister Daryl Vaz, this morning testified at the Dudus/Manatt commission of enquiry that the US$50,000 paid as legal fees to United States law firm Manatt, Phelps and Phillips, was not paid by accused drug lord, Christopher 'Dudus' Coke.Under questioning from the attorney representing the People's National Party, Leonard Green, Vaz said the money was 'clean'. Green had suggested to Vaz that it was public perception that the legal bill was footed by Coke."The money came from traditional, clean funds," Vaz testified. He denied a suggestion by Green that the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) got involved in the extradition matter to have the US withdraw the request for Coke's extradition.Vaz also maintained that the services of Manatt was not secured on behalf of the Jamaican Government but for the JLP.He said his party was deeply embarrassed because attorney Harold Brady did not follow the instructions of Prime Minister Bruce Golding that Manatt's service should be secured for the JLP.Brady has refused to give evidence at the enquiry which is taking place at the Jamaica Conference Centre in downtown Kingston.
