Attorney at law Arlene Beckford, pleaded not guilty to fraud charges when the case against her came up in court on Thursday. However, Ms Beckford, who was making made her first court appearance since being charged, paid over $4 million she is accused of stealing from her client.She is to return to court on February 15, when a Magistrate is to decide her fate.Ms Beckford was arrested on Friday at her law firm, and charged by Fraud Squad detectives following allegations that she defrauded one of her clients of more than $4 million in a real estate deal.It is reported that in 2008, the attorney sold a house on behalf of the client and collected a cheque for more than $5 million from the National Housing Trust (NHT) as part of the deal.However, after collecting her fees from the deal, investigators say the attorney failed to hand over the money to her client.The client, who lived abroad, reported the matter to the police, on her return to the island.
