Solicitor General Douglas Leys says US law firm Manatt, Phelps and Phillips was working for Harold Brady and not the government of Jamaica. There has been contention about whose interest the US law firm was representing in the extradition request for Christopher Dudus Coke. In a filing with the US Justice Department, the US law firm had stated that it was contracted by the government of Jamaica. However, Prime Minister Bruce Golding had stated that it was the Jamaica Labour Party and not the government that engaged the services of the US law firm. The Jamaica Labour Party had requested Harold Brady to use his links to lobby the USgovernment over the extradition request. Attorney Dr. Lloyd Barnett, who is representing the Justice Minister, Dorothy Lightbourne read a letter issued by the law firm about their engagement and that they were working on behalf of Harold Brady. Dr. Barnett then put it to Mr. Leys that it would not be truthful to say that the government contracted the firm.
