Over 200 residents of St. Catherine have been diagnosed with the dreaded dengue fever since the middle of last month. Addressing on Thursday's monthly meeting of the St. Catherine Parish Council, Acting Chief Public Health Inspector for the Parish Richard Baker said several tests in January revealed over 30 confirmed cases."Since mid-January we continue to have dengue cases, in fact at that time we had 235 clinically confirmed cases and 38 lab confirmed cases and we have had no deaths from dengue," Mr. Baker said. Dengue fever is a virus based disease, spread by mosquitos and presents with, among other things, a severe fever.Meanwhile, People's National Party Councillor for the Ewarton Division Beverly Jobson Grant has asked the St. Catherine Health Department to conduct a food inspection drive in her division.She said she is making the request against the background of an increase in the number of children diagnosed with gastroenteritis in the Division.Gastroenteritis is an inflammation of the stomach and intestinal tract resulting in acute diarrhoea.It is spread through contaminated food and water.
