State witness Alexander Johnson is scheduled to take the stand again Wednesday when the trial of international reggae artiste Buju Banton resumes in Tampa, Florida. The defence began questioning Mr. Johnson Tuesday with the intent of establishing the circumstances which led to him linking up with Buju, whose given name is Mark Myrie.Buju's attorney David Markus spent much of Tuesday's hearing prodding the state witness about how he became a source for the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).Mr. Johnson was described as having strong drug ties dating as far back as 1993, when he was indicted for drug trafficking in Miami. The court was told that Mr. Johnson made millions more than he did as a drug trafficker, now that he was a confidential source for the US Government. When asked about his lifestyle, Mr. Johnson admitted that he lived lavishly off the funds he earned by helping the government to take down drug dealers. He also admitted to making more than US$50,000 from the case involving Buju and his co-accused.Mr. Markus tried to use this point to establish that Mr. Johnson might have had other motives to pursue the Jamaican entertainer. When Mr. Johnson was earlier questioned by the defence, he said he was the one who struck a conversation with Buju when they met on the plane. This was a contradiction of his previous statement that Buju was the one who first spoke with him and asked him about drugs because he was Colombian.
