The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) has hired a team of lawyers to fight the suit filed by police Corporal Malica Reid challenging the legality of his arrest.INDECOM boss Terrence Williams would not release the names of the attorneys, but said yesterday that the suit has already been turned over to them."We believe that we were correct in law in what we did and we are instructing counsel to deal with this issue filed by Corporal Reid," Williams insisted yesterday.Reid, who was arrested and charged with murder by INDECOM investigators on February 25, is contending that this violated his constitutional rights. Reid's argumentThe police corporal is arguing, in his suit, that the INDECOM Act does not give the commission or its investigators the power to arrest or charge anyone for any criminal offence.The decision by INDECOM to charge Reid - for the alleged shooting death of Negril businessman Frederick 'Mickey' Hill - has ignited a controversy over the interpretation of the INDECOM Act.Section 20 of the act confers on the commissioner and his investigators powers similar to those given to a police constable.Minister of Justice Dorothy Lightbourne has announced that she is awaiting a legal opinion on the matter from Solicitor General Douglas Leys.
