The Portland Police have arrested two men in separate incidents for trying to bribe police officers. Those charged are Eugene Thompson of Highgate in St. Mary, and 24-year-old George Pottinger of Brooklyn in New York.They were held in separate sting operations organised by the police.Mr. Thompson was arrested for breaches of the Scrap Metal Act on March 21 along the Buff Bay main road in the parish, after his motor car was seized with a large amount of scrap metal reportedly found inside the vehicle.He reportedly went to the Buff Bay Police Station and offered the investigating officer $8,000 to drop the charges being laid against him but was charged with bribery.He appeared in the Portland Resident Magistrate's Court on Thursday, where he was granted $60,000 bail.He is scheduled to return to court on May 11.Mr. Pottinger meanwhile, was arrested on Thursday, March 24 after one of his relatives was held for possession of ganja during an early morning operation by lawmen at Folly Road, Port Antonio, Portland.It is reported that Mr. Pottinger approached the investigating officer and offered him $4,000 to drop the charge against his relative.He is to appear in the Portland Resident Magistrate's Court on Friday, March 25.
