Ok, sarry fi suh late.
(((MG))) thanx for leaving it open. As you know, I was travelling for a little while, trip took longer than was orginally scheduled. Got a couple minutes here and there to read thru, but couldnt join in. I will read thru the entire thing now and come back and share my thoughts. [img]/forums/images/graemlins/70409-waytogo.gif[/img]

Wow. Well, after reading through all of this, there really is not much to say, you guys have said and discussed it all!
I do however want to say this. I just want to touch a little on the "love story" (or lack thereof) between Jean and Paul.
It was clear that Jean's life was full of a lot of inheririted and self-inflicted strife. Any child who was Monica's daughter was doomed to have issues. With Jean running from the life that was now hers, and learning more about herself and family along the way, I thought that she would have seen that Paul was somewhat the answer to "her running" or "her running alone". Someone up top mentioned that they dont buy the author's response to that, and I dont think I do too. The non-predictable ending to the "love story" however I think was crafted that way to reflct all the other instability in the story; the mother daughter relationships, the community instability, political uproar, etc. Its all in line.
Ofcourse, its only a book, but I dont think that Jean's life was much better off after the ending of the book. I think she is the kind of character that will always be dealing with misfortunes, she just seem like that kinda person. Because of that I think that Paul would have been the perfect person for her, to help her through, console her, be there for her; but I guess she thought she needed more than that.

interesting insight ColeS, and i agree with your view of the Jean-Paul relationship, and where it could have gone. It's possible, too, that the author may have thought Jean and Paul getting together would have seemed too predictable, too much like a happy ending, and so chose to go another way.

Good insight. And I agree, happy endings are not always the answer.

Now, a lot of bad things have happened to Jean and the people that were close to her. Do you think that it is realistic that all that calamity can be experienced by just one person? I mean how many of you have had that much drama happen to you in such a short period of time? [img]/forums/images/graemlins/70402-thinking.gif[/img]

Exactly MG Magic.
It seem as if thats just "jean's life" and "forever jean's life". I have never had all that Drama at once, but I have known of people to experience a lot of unfortunate events all at once, and then there are some people (who I try to distance myself from [img]/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif[/img]) who seem to be a magnet for such things. [img]/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif[/img] Jean just seem like that kind of person to me.
I understand the point of the "non happy ending". I think Paul would have been good for her though. \o/
