That question was posed months ago by a friend in an email, wanting to know when am I going to pursue writing my own book. This happened when that infamous American Airlines Flight 331 sketch went viral. I gave him the usual lackadaisical response I give to every body – “Wan day…soon come.” But as usual, that was just talk. During that same period, I got a barrage of PMs from members of this board with words of advice and encouragement to pursue writing. Some of you also made public pleas on the board for me to get serious.
Xavier also followed up by giving me a swift kick in the behine to get serious and he became very persistent. He spent literally weeks sending emails here and there to any and every one he knew that he thought could provide guidance to get me published. Bless his heart!
The kind of effort I saw Xavier put out then showed me just how much he believed in me. On top of that, in a weird way, his actions made me feel a sense of guilt. I felt if I didn’t do something – anything – I would be disappointing him and so many others who were shoving me in the back to get moving! Sadly, nothing panned out from those contacts. But that only left me with a choice. Forget about it or just make a decision to take my own destiny in my own hands.
Now for the interesting part. Back in 2000 I was a gift partner with Blackberry Rain (long time member) for “Stuff my Stockings”. She PMed me to ask me what I wanted as a gift. I could not think of anything. I told her that she should decide on a gift and I would appreciate anything she came up with. One week later, a package showed up at my house and it was a book. The title – “Writers’ Guide to Publishing.” To be honest, I read the first chapter and never got past that. Life and work caught up with me.
Then in 2001, another former boardite, JudgeB, sent me a book out of the blue. The Title – “The Writer’s Market Companion.” In it he wrote verbatim: “Wendy, mi noh know is what teking u so long but si wan book I think would interest you. I hope you get some inspiration out of it to pursue writing.” Again, my lazy butt did not get too much into the book past the first couple chapters.
That was then. This past March I dusted off both books. I started with the one from Blackberry Rain then moved on to the other. That marked the beginning of a nerve racking journey.
