I remember her telling me off when I said something derogatory bout my granmere who raised me that had passed......I wanted to answer and say back something feisty..... but I didn't as her board persona reminded me of a favourite family member.....who would take me to task when I said something they considered out of place

still in shock about her passing I didn't even know she was ill I can feel her smiling now ((((((Shandra)))))

Pepper, glad you bumped this thread. I still can't believe Miss Shandra gawn and leff we.

She was very caring and at the same time she really was feisty. I've been missing her posts for a long time but thought she was busy with life and things...

Through the magic of Facebook, Shandra and I discovered we shared a cousin. I received a PM from her saying

'hey Pepper, I see you are FB friends with my cousin S. How do you know her?'

'S is my cousin!'

'Cousin Pepper! Small world een? How are you related to her?'

'S calls my grandmother auntie'

'Oh, S's mom is my dad's sister'

'OK, I am related to her on father's side'

'aaaww, well then we aren't cousins, but its nice to know we have a connection'

And so from there she was Cousin Shandra and I was Cousin Pepper.

Kia Alerted me to Shandra's passing and I let her know I would reach out to my cousin to see if she had anything to share. We all know how hard it is when we hear of another board member's passing and we only have bits and pieces of information. That is one of the tough parts about online friendships.

My cousin S shared and e-mail she received from Shandra's sister. I forwarded sis a link to this thread and will post her response to me shortly. She let me know it was OK to share the e-mail I received from cousin S.

Just to let you know that my sister, Yvonne, passed away yesterday, Oct 27th, in Freeport, Grand Bahama. As you may know she was diagnosed with colon cancer 4 years ago. She was on chemotherapy during this 4 year period and did very well on treatment. However in the last couple of months she deteriorated and had to be hospitalized a few times.

Her son, XXX was a rock of support and took excellent care of his mother.
She did not want to return to Jamaica. Having made her home in The Bahamas for more than 20 years, she wanted her final resting place to be there.

I stayed with her for the last week. We laughed, we cried, we prayed but most of all we talked and talked and talked. It was my privilege to have served her during this time. She was gracious and dignified to the end. She was not afraid. She literally walked into the arms of death and peacefully slipped away.

She was readmitted to hospital three days before she died. During this time I got a chance to see firsthand for myself why she did not want to come back to Jamaica. The outpouring of love and support was phenomenal. Her students, both at primary school and college levels, came in droves to see her. They read notes to her from other students and they tenderly told her how much they loved and appreciated her. Needless to say there were tears all around. The school she taught at, had to be closed on the day she died because the entire school was in mourning. The other people whose lives she had touched were there to support her/us. Her attending doctor was very impressed by the outpouring that came from so many persons including past students, whose lives had been shaped by 'Miz Neylson' as they call her. I find it hard to believe that the hospital could have seen anything like that before and the good thing is that she was aware enough of what was happening to receive their expressions of love and appreciation. I had no idea she was having such an impact on the island. I was able to tell her that I finally understood why she did not want to come home (Jamaica).

XXX is being supported by his wife and her family as well. He can certainly take comfort in the fact that his mother was appreciated far more than he could have imagined.

Her funeral will be on Nov 12th (Saturday) at 11:00am at Christ The King Church, Freeport.

Thanks for making contact. Your comments and those seen on the link you shared, have been heartwarming. It is good to know that Yvonne will be remembered by so many in such a warm and meaningful way. She shared with me about her 'online group' and mentioned that she had not been able to 'talk' for a while. I guess now you know why.

It is especially gratifying to see her being remembered just as we know her, by those who have known her for a relatively short time. This 'grief thing' still has mysterious elements regardless of how much has gone into breaking it down into manageable components. Just to say that knowing she is being remembered by others in this way helps.

Feel free to share from my e-mail to S, as you see fit.

wow, wish me did get a chance to tell her how me feel before she gone,

me feel good dow dat she was able to witness the love folks had for her, and to think she was in a strange land and got all that love, wonderful human being, beautiful lady,

4 1/2 degrees of separation. Amazing how small our world has become. I will miss Shandra, I noticed she had not been around. We shared a few animal well being pm exchanges where I learned her absolute love for her dogs.
