Jamaica braces for rice row with Guyana

Jamaica is bracing for a trade row with Guyana and other CARICOM rice producers.
This comes in the wake of the Government's decision to import rice from outside the region prior to getting a response to its request for a suspension of the 25% Common External Tariff (CET).
Commerce Minister Karl Samuda on Monday night disclosed that Jamaica had ordered 30,000 tonnes of rice from the United States.
He said Guyana objected to the move.
However, Mr. Samuda said Jamaica had to take urgent action to ensure that it continued to receive adequate supplies of rice.
