Educate them for export - Hill

Financial guru Aubyn Hill yesterday challenged tertiary education heads and instructors to train their charges to the standard where they can compete on the global market.

Hill, chairman of NationGrowth Micro-finance, was addressing the 17th annual conference of the Joint Committee for Tertiary Education at the Mona Visitors' Lodge and Conference Centre at the University of the West Indies, Mona campus, in St Andrew.

Hill, who was the guest speaker at the conference conducted under the theme 'Education for Wealth Creation: Economic Development', said Jamaica should position itself as a place of educational excellence within the region.

"Jamaica must become the education centre of the Caribbean," said Hill. "We must become the best producers and exporters of trained people in the region."

While noting that many people may be concerned about the brain drain in the country, Hill pointed out that Jamaica should train sufficient professionals to supply local demand and for overseas employment.

"Given our relatively young population and the employment of our already trained population, the fit-for-export education product is the way to go for the future," he added.

Hill, who has worked in the Far East, said for three decades remittances to Sri Lanka and India kept increasing as professional residents employed across the globe sent money back home.

somewhere in there i know he thinks he is saying something of benefit, but in the Jamaica of today an the mentality that is taking hold, the message is off...nation building in the immediate can never be achieved , if in the forefront of ur mind , is the idea of making them fit for outside standards...make them fit for being fit for today's standards, period...subtle difference but means a hell of a lot wen u motivating

Possibly, but going by the slice of expat life here on the board, myself included, it's not exactly an overwhelming trend.

Jamaica today is like the west of old. as the people becomes more educated they developement of th einfrastructite also develope to the point where it really do not matter. Wgar=t we need to do now is to throw off the chains of theplantocrat controll of the country. remove the glass cieling that keep the blacks in theor designated places, againmst their best poyentials. then the country will see the return of the skilled in deoves. As a matter of fact jamaica is still better for the retired Jamaicans than most od the US today, because of their colour and how it is used in health management.

I would say that Jamaica does produce students that can compete world wide..UWI graduates I have met have been more self aware and internationally focued than the rest.. In fact compare graduates from UWI Mona Campus the best of the Caribean 80 % end up with a career internationally and compart that to Harvard less than 3% go international.... Doc is a prime example he went to UWI then went international.. He then went to Harvard and stayed in the US .. Dont get mad Doc.... Just consulting the database ...

It's kind of tough to break the glass ceiling fram farrin. I know too many well educated, once their degree in hand, they're off to Canada, the UK, the US and there's no looking back other than sending remittances which Mr. Hill refers to.

I don't know; maybe I'm just annoyed with myself and my laziness or is it lack of entrepreneurial skills. Not to mention, when I discuss the idea of moving to JA, family and friends who have a certain amount of influence there tell me to stay in France where I have a good job, what do I want to live in JA for, etc., etc. So when the "elite" discourage returnees, what is one to make of that?

Blackstar, hope springs eternal that this go rung, changes in attitudes, most of all, will allow for those of us who have been long in the diaspora, to go home an start biznizes , enter politics etc

my experience has been that with the brain drain of the 70s, many, left behind who filled slots and then worked to achieve the paper to go with it, i.e. degrees etc, r not all that enchanted with our coming with our outside learned experiences and habits...i.e.work ethics...constant is the mantra, well is juss so yaad stay, no bada come gwanie gwanie cause u did deh a farrin,etc etc...u mite hear seh ur expertise is wanted, but wen u challenge long practised methods, u wud be surprised how widespread the disenchantment is...management dont even want u to point out how dem denigrate certain type of workers etc...and it goes awn an awn...

hopefully, a new wave of thinking will come and i had hoped with di canadian guy an oddas, dat dem would instill some new approaches...but it seems at time dat it is easier to revert than buck the trend

No they don't get special treatment. Their grades are just better,and you know what? they are some of the most mature young people on these campuses. Yes UWI really produce quality graduates, but don't tell the local Jamaican business elite that.
The problem with returning is you have to be trained in establishing and operating a business, to get the best foot hold.

Fledg made that point on here long ago.... I recall him mentioning in an article that there was resistance from AA's "leaders" as to Jamaicans getting better cracks at the whip in the US..

Maybe its me but I have never ever classified or pigeoned hole Jamaicans into a minority category... I tend to see us as competing with the best.... on equal terms. I tend to see white yankees clasifying us in these pejorative manner.. ie a minority... I had a long convbersation with the head of BP North African company. He was Ismali Muslim of Indian descent... on theis same subject.... We are all minorities in the world... Jamaicans of African descent belong to a larger minority than do anglo yankees! That is teh world veiw..

Thus on this matter Jamaican Students had better start being able to understand chinese and Indian culture.. We are aware of yankee sensibilities... But are we aware of middle eastern Chinese or Indians.. How we seek markets has to change.. We may get goods into these makets.. We have gone as far as we can into yankee with the product mix we have.... (Just scaling up getting new markets as opposed to finding new products simply for yankee markets).. Thus to spin it another way if we see the world as simply yankee we are in trouble..

(You have done buinsess in China... How easy was it for you to abapt ?? And you must have been aware the chinese adapted to you???)

Jamaicans do have natural advantages when comparing to US students... Many of these come out of the elitist Jamaican institutions.. like u or me doc...

Once through these insitutions we wont have the cultural disadvantage that asians have.... even when factoring in equality of wealth..

Jamaicans have a reputation ascapable students being able to go head to head to the best from any of the worlds elite schools. Yes i do business with China and India. I find china easiely adaptable than Indians i associate with......'I on th eother hand have no problem wity adopying. I really do not adopt as I adjust to their culture unless it conflicts with my goals.
Jamaicans will survive some how, ... we just have to adopt.
