Crime not affecting investment - PM
Tuesday, 20 May 2008
Prime Minister Bruce Golding has dismissed concerns on the international scene that Jamaica's worsening crime problem could affect the country's attractiveness to investors.
Speaking on BBC television programme "Hard Talk" Monday night, Mr. Golding said while crime is a major cause for concern, Jamaica continues to attract new investments.
"Despite the crime rate, investments continue to flow. We're negotiating now with some major investors ... we have one resort development where we're talking about US$5 and US7 billion of investments, I've just concluded negotiations with another group for an investment of US$2.2 billion so (crime) not the problem."
Spanish slowing down development
Mr. Golding also confirmed reports that the US recession is having a negative impact on the expansion of new hotel rooms in Jamaica.
The Prime Minister disclosed that the developers of a major hotel are reviewing the number of rooms to be constructed at this time.
"The North American market has turned sour and what the Spanish investors have said to us is that because the US market is soft, we're going to have to slow down in terms of the speed with which we were developing new accommodation in Jamaica and we accept that."
