PNP's Sharon Hay Webster May Resign

RJR News understands that Member of Parliament (MP) for South Central St. Catherine, Sharon Hay-Webster is considering resigning as a consequence of her dual citizenship status.

The MP who has been in Gordon House since 1997 has reportedly found herself in an untenable position in the wake of the recent court ruling on the status of another MP, Daryl Vaz of the governing Jamaica Labour Party (JLP).

In March, Chief Justice Zaila McCalla ruled that Mr. Vaz was not qualified to sit in Parliament when he contested last September's general election as he held American citizenship which is in contravention of the Jamaican Constitution.

This ruling reportedly has similar implications for several other members of the JLP as well as Mrs. Hay-Webster of the opposition People's National Party (PNP).

Mr. Vaz gained his American citizenship from his United States (US) born mother.

Mrs. Hay Webster was born in the US in September 1961 to a Jamaican father and a Haitian born mother.

She was brought to Jamaica by her parents the following year and has been living here since.

Mrs. Hay Webster has been insisting that she will not give up her status as an American citizen

The PNP and the JLP have expressed a willingness to meet on the matter, but neither party has said whether legislative changes would be a part of the talks.

The judge specufucally state that Mr vas cortravene the statute, by signing ytjhe passport. Wher did she sugn any US passport that she hever has?
Who is advising her?
I think th eloss of hew r uncle is getting to her.
I knew calvin,he was a very quiet man,but I also know that alzhiemers patients are very stubbern to th epoint wher they can become violent. Even th eones that ut is against their nature. So it shoyld not be about his begavior. It is all about thes epeople murddrung him. No behaaavior can justify slitting a man's throat.
People capable of doing that should be kept in prison for life.

I agree something does'nt add up with the Hay-Webster case. Which is why I say that there may be something that she is not telling us. I've read that she only has a Jamaican passport, then I'm reading something now that says she had a US passport which she got at birth and which has since expired. I see nothing there that would go against her sitting in parliament if her situation is as she describes it...but we only know what she has put forward which leaves me to think there is more to her case than she is letting on.

PNP seeking 'updated legal opinion' on Hay-Webster




THE Opposition People's National Party (PNP) denied yesterday that its South Central St Catherine MP, Sharon Hay-Webster, was planning to resign her seat because of her alleged dual citizenship status, but promised to seek an 'updated legal opinion on the matter'.

A radio report yesterday said the MP was considering ending her political career, instead of renouncing her United States citizenship as the legal row over the issue heats up.

Hay-Webster, who was born in the United States in 1961 to a Haitian mother and Jamaican father, was brought to Jamaica as an infant and has been a resident here since. She has, however, held that her situation differed from that of other politicians who are said to hold dual citizenship in that while she was born in the US and holds an American passport she has not travelled on the document.

There has been pressure on parliamentarians said to be holding dual citizenship after the Supreme Court ruled in April that Government MP Daryl Vaz (West Portland) be disqualified from sitting in the House because, by renewing and travelling on his US passport, Vaz has sworn allegiance to the USA.

Vaz has since renounced his US citizenship which would make him eligible to run for the seat if a by-election is held. The by-election would, however, depend on the outcome of the appeal in the matter brought by the PNP's Abe Dabdoub, who had lost the seat to Vaz in last September's general election.

The PNP, in a statement yesterday, said &quot;initial advice received on Mrs Hay-Webster's status indicated that she was eligible to sit in the House of Representatives&quot;.

The party said, however, that an <span style="font-weight: bold">updated legal opinion </span>was being sought on the matter, in light of the Vaz ruling.

&quot;As the situation currently exists the seat for St Catherine South Central is not vacant,&quot; the
PNP said.

Euphuism for, we want to get her out.
Why would the Opposition so publicly challenge their own, especially when they are holding the handle?
My guess is not only certain fractions want her out (as I have discovered), but want to keep Portia Simpson-Miller in her Party Leader job, so they have to find ardent supporters to of the said fractions to stick in keep positions.

Yes I personally know of a person who was spirited out of the community to be president and renounced and is now a ptivate citizen awith full voting rights back here again, after it did not work out as they thimk.
