Slight increase in winter tourist season figures

Preliminary figures for the 2008 winter tourist season have indicated an 8.4% increase in stopover arrivals.

For the January to March period, stopover arrivals were 483,000 up from 427,000 in 2007.

Director of Tourism, Basil Smith said he anticipates a double digit increase in arrivals when calculations are completed.

February recorded the highest increase with arrivals up 17%.

Giving details on individual market performances, Mr. Smith pointed out that the US continued to dominate stopover arrivals with 300,000 visitors.

Canada and Europe followed with 92,000 and 68,000 visitors, respectively.

Contrary to what many in the tourist industry think. The introduction of almost cut rate hollidays by the Spaniards will be th esayior of Jamaica's tourist business. People do not take vacations as a luxury any more. It is a necessity,to maintain physical and mental health.
They will choose affordable plans instead of not having one. Many visitors save epecially for vacations. Many of thise may not be able to vosot Jamaica,
. But many previously upmarket clients wull certainly find Jamaica atractiuve. In other words Jamaica will still be in demand.

so why all dem upmarket properties being built a yaad since cheap is di way of the future... an wid fewer planes an higher seat prices how u figga di cheaper travel...charters i guess...dont

I did not say it is the way of the future. Those are your words. It is the way to benefit from the present economic down turn. Investors don't build for short term markets,but they adopt their mricing strategy to survive down turns. This just happen to be one such time. .
One more thing, how can they refer to a 8.4% growth as 'slight'??
If the rest of the economy was growing at that rate, we would soon ave to import workers. th eauthor don't even know his subject. Can't they find some undremployed economics graduate from UWI to write these pieces?

but the economy not growing an we still import workers....there is a boatload coming from Cuba to help in our health industry and let us not forget the many consultants and cops...
