Re: Interest article - Setphanie Black -Life & Debt
[/qb]
funny you should say curb biases when in the previous post you said manley was the best thing that ever happened to Jamaica! :saying a prayer:
both sides? JLP candidates have been jailed under "state of emergency" on election day so they couldnt even cast their votes!
yes, both sides do participate in those activities but it would be a complete lie to say that it hasnt been carried out on a much larger scale by PNP. The JLP are usually reactionary. [/QB]
Donnika, I am advocating neither JLP,PNP nor any other political party, but stating a fact.
The Jamaicans who remained at home when the crisis began at the end of the 70s, beginning of the 80s had to stand up and show their mettle, and this happend under the aegis of Michael Manley, and the Jamaica we see today is a result of what happened at that time.
There is a saying: When the going gets tough, the tough gets going. Times got really tough at that time because of reasons already mentioned and Jamaica got going. There was no more help from Uncle Sam nor his cohorts, so we had to help ourselves. The only thing that really went wrong is that the original plans for the country was not brought to the fruition it should have. We buckled under pressure, so the struggle goes on.
Jamaicas was not alone in this. Many other countries who did not align themselves to US guidelines were also affected, and this fact is the subject of many books, none of which; I think, has been written by a Jamaican. Here are some recommended readings for you.
Liberty, Equality and Power, A History of the American People, volume II
Apocalypse & Future
the Princeton Review
Chronologigal History of US Foreign relations
Acid Dreams
The Cost of War.
Many more titles can be found by googling for, the History of the CIA in Third World Countries. the majority are written by American Historians and ex-CIA agents, so don't take my words for. Go to the lions mouth.
The USA is not the saint, it professes to be, and America the free is not as free as some think. Very few people living in Americans really know what this country has propogated all over the world. It is very powerful, and don't forget "Power corrupts, and absolutely power corrupts absolutely". It is the ongoing story of the human race - the strong forces the weak to do his bidding, or else.
