GOLDING LAUNCHES ATTACK ON ECONOMICS—10/16/05
Opposition leader Bruce Golding has launched a vehement attack on the government, decrying the economic situation in Jamaica. Golding believes the Jamaican economy is unable to generate the resources necessary to address an urgent situation hindering the country’s upward mobility. The opposition leader has been touring and speaking about Jamaica’s missed opportunities, highlighting the 1990s, which saw unprecedented growth for developing countries, but which saw Jamaica lag behind in growth over the ten-year period. Golding stresses the country’s total debt and the debt service of those loans as major reasons for the country’s lagging economy. The debt has grown from $38 billion to $800 billion since 1989. He also emphasized the need to curtail crime in order to spur economic growth.

I recently watched Life and Debt though it took me three tries. I found it horrific. I read through this topic because I hoped I would learn something, but most of you have just sunk into name calling and emotional outburst. I would very much like to be told that the film is untrue; but no one has given any facts as to where it is inaccurate. I may as well be reading a forum between Fenians and Orangemen in Northern Ireland.

To Donnika and MaasDee: As said before, I am not advocating which political party is better. I simply wanted to point out what happened in the 1980s, and how Jamaica as a nation had to take on the challenge and do something for itself, because it was either that or sink. This happened durin the Michael Manley era, because of the politics embraced that was not convergent with USA policies.

American, and ex-CIA agent, Philip Agee wrote a book 'CIA Diary: Inside The Company', where among other things, the US intervention in, and destabilization of Jamaica during the Michael Manley era is outlined.

This is not economics. It is politics.

Any discourse about economic growth comparison between countries has to take into consideration,many varianles. Not The lease of which is the effect pf annual narutal disasters. How many times rebuilfong process gave to be carried out and what could thoswe funds be used for in the economic process.

You would have had to lived through that period in Jamaica to be able to judge the accuracy or inaccuracy of the documentary. I did and was on both sides of the politics at different times.

The film has many truths in it but the way they are represented and the casting of blame is biased and hostile towards the JLP and that is the root of it being reduced to crap. The chick is also blatantly pro- Manley, another reason to question her true motives in representing her documentary the way she did.

Well action speak louder than words!

I do not dispute the CIA or America's involvement in Jamaica's politics, they do it in every country they have some interest in. What I don't believe however is that the US had any intentions on long term destablization or to ruin Jamaica's economy.

Manley was running around to different communist countries, flirting with their leaders and philosophies so when America withheld aid, it was in their best interest. We suffered some, yes, but it was Manley's fault, not America's.

I could do as you did and Google volumes of web pages that supports my position and link them here as you did but I realy don't have the time or interest to, so.....

I stand by my opinion and I trust my experiences in Jamaica more than the comments of some person I don't even know, posting on a web site.

I believe Mr Golding is more credible than you so I'll believe his assesment over yours any day!

He might be a politician but his comments weren't just "politics", they are facts about our present economic state. That's something that should be given more attention than Stephanie Black's sordid tale!

MaasDee, me noh badda respond to dem caw dem feel say the fact dat dem preface dem bias responses wid "I'm unbiased" or "me neva vote yet" mek dem unbiased.
and as for the article by some unknown, black power-crazy, radical "liberal/communist" who probably never set foot in Jamaica, I could care less what he thinks. My own experience, knowledge of jamaican politics and older people I trust are more credable to me.

Inasmuch as those like Donnika and Maas Dee respond to questions posed to them by name-calling, this discussion can go nowhere intellectually.
Your knowledge is so parochial and limited to Jamaica that you have no knowledge of even nearby places like Cuba with its unique economic and political systems.

You also have displayed a very limited knowledge of how U.S foreign policy operates and has operated in the Caribbean and Latin America: the big neocolonial picture.

As I have said before, there are so many who nitpick the small stuff like party rivalries and corruption when it is Jamaica's adherence to U.S. style capitalism in a country in which that kind of economic system does not and cannot work that is the overriding problem.

Of course independently wealthy people like Donnika and Maas Dee don't really WANT a change in the economic status quo since it benefits the top 5% so well.

Debate the point: Capitalism as imposed on Jamaica by the United States does not work in Third World (insufficient or no resources, heavily indebted) countries. If you disagree, name the countries.
Socialist Cuba is the only country in the Caribbean and Latin America that provides adequate food, medical care and education to ALL its people. Care to debate these facts?
