So I read one of <span style="font-style: italic">Le Monde</span>'s opinion pieces written by an expatriate African in which he states that people back home rely too much on remittances and that it is killing local initiative and economic activity. Apparently it's even becoming commonplace for people to stop planting. They then inform the family member abroad that the crop failed and to send more money.

Anyway, do you think remittances and barrels are destroying initiative in Jamaica in a similar way?

So people who migrate and leave their family should simply abandon their financial responsibillity.
since they are working on foreign shores,they shoilde simply forget to send the money that is their responsibillity to send to support their families. Because it causes lazuness.
What about the expatriates that are working in these countries?

Do they not support their families where they left them?
Their kids in school, their old parents? Does that creates laziness abroad too.

No it wuldn't, because we are talking about a different race.
That is what I'm talking about. The people who talk this way is simply exposing the crab-in-a barrel attitude.

What is new? How can such a responsible behavior be charactized in such a negative way?
If they did not honoir their responsibillity,they would be blamed. Now they do and they are still blamed.

u r someting else...the point being made by Blackstar has nothing to do wid minors....it has to do wid adults who use the remittances as their sole support...sometimes u can read beyond wat the article is saying out loud...it goes widdout saying that people send bak fi youngsters an in some cased to supplement elders etc...but, the onus should not be on them to support all an sundry juss cause foreign currency exchanges up, i.e. u get nuff local money fi di incoming farrin one

Never in a million years would I suggest that a migrant should abandon their family in need.

I do find the idea of discussing remittances useful. High levels of remittances do not appear to be conducive to development (Mexico and the Philippines also depend heavily on remittances and remain deperately poor countries). So how can senders/recipients make remittances more productive? What are the dis/advantages of remittances? What can be done to increase the advantages, while reducing any negative impact like those mentioned in the editorial piece?

Never in a million years would I suggest that a black person should abandon their family in need.

I do find the idea of discussing remittances intriguing. It is rather only a symptom of th eprioblem. Ther are other reasins why these economies do not prisper even with th eremottances. What you are not comparing it with is how it does without those remittances. There are other digiciencies ih thiose enconoimies that prevent the benefit from the remittance.
Just like how tourism benefits developed countries,but does niot seem to benefit inder developed ones. It is all aboit the ecoinomiuc system that supports it.
