The Opposition Peoples National Party (PNP) has taken Prime Minister Bruce Golding to task for his reference to the matter of dual citizenship as a constitutional absurdity.
Mr. Golding made this comment while addressing the Third Biennial Jamaican Diaspora Conference held in Kingston on Monday.
He said plans to reserve two seats in the Senate for representatives of the Jamaican Diaspora may not come to light as the dual citizenship issue is rooted in the constitution.
However, the Opposition bashed the comment saying the issue of dual citizenship was not clearly outlined to the gathering.
"The Opposition is of the view that the real issues should have been properly explained to the members of the Jamaican family that they may with certain conditions invest in Jamaica.
They should have been further advised that there are a few areas touching for example upon service in the Parliament and the upper reaches of the electoral system to which certain conditions are attached," said Opposition Spokesman on Justice, A.J. Nicholson.
Under the constitution, if a Jamaican has sworn allegiance to a foreign state and he wishes to serve in the Parliament of his country he must be prepared to renounce his obligatory ties to that other state.
