President of the Jamaica Chamber of Commerce (JCC) Mark Myers has put forward a proposal which he says could help the Government to increase tax compliance.
Mr. Myers is suggesting that if the Government lowers the tax on imported goods it will rid the Customs Department of corruption.
In recent weeks the issue of tax compliance has dominated the news in the wake of Finance Minister Audley Shaw chiding members of the private sector for being corrupt.
But the JCC head says some persons have been reluctant to pay taxes because of the high duties.
Mr. Myers says if the government reduces the duties it will earn more revenue and have an easier task in cleaning up the system.
"What we need to do is strengthen the consequences as well as simplify the system and take some of the money out of it. The only reason there is this level of corruption and people are willing to take the risk is because there is a lot of money to be made," said Mr. Myers.
