RESIDENTS OF MATTHEWS Lane say although area leader Donald 'Zekes' Phipps has been absent from the community for several months, he is still in charge.

The residents say there are no attempts to take over the community by internal or external people.

In June, some residents had claimed that the men chased from the community last year, returned and attempted to take back control of the area in Phipps' absence, but these attempts failed. They say the community is united.

"Di whola a wi grow up together and live together and nutten nah gwann roun here," a senior member of the community told THE STAR.

In an attempt to prevent any take-over, residents say they have been careful about whom they allow to enter. "We nuh harbour man weh nuh come from bout yah because next ting dem go do dem wrongs and people go seh a fi wi friend," one resident said.

Others note that there have been attempts to disturb the order in the downtown marketing district since Phipps was arrested, but claim that this will not be allowed. "Dem a try gi wi bad name since di man gwaan, but wi innocent cause since him gwaan everything still peaceful down here," a resident said.

Residents also say Phipps is innocent of claims revealed in court recently of sexual interactions with a man he is accused of killing. "A lie people a tell. Is just like good cop, bad cop ting. True somebody nuh like yuh, dem wi try spread rumour pan yuh," a resident said.

The resident said even if Phipps were not found innocent, he would have clear conscience. "From him know inna fi himself seh him innocent den him have a clear conscience and that is good enough," a resident said.

All a who a seh Zekes still a run tings are his combolos who will say anything to make him look good. The majority of the residents are glad he's gone, even though they still live in fear of his thugs, hence their pretending to miss him.

I am not as ancient as you might think, I just used some of the former mega dons who were once thought to be invincible yet were dropped by the wayside as soon as they became a liability instead of an asset to their political leaders.

Things can be different and peace is possible but those with the influence and power to make this happen don't want it to because it will only cut their power base.

While most of the killings in Jamaica may seem pointless and arbitrary, they are well orchestrated by devious power greedy politicians and their area leaders.

West Kingston and Jamaica once knew what peace was like back in the late 70s when Matthews Lane and Tivoli Gardens declared a peace truce after years of waring with each other.

This lasted for a long while and spread island wide. Eventually politicians saw their power base eroding because of the newfound unity of the "warriors" and decided to end it. The grand finale was the murder execution of Claudy Massop the leader of Tivoli Gardens.

Divide and conquer is the order of the day, not peace. Politicians who influence these waring factions have the ability to stop the murders and the murderers but as it doesnt suit their ends it will never happen.

If he really isn't running things, it's only a matter of time before severe violence overtakes matthews lane. they may be glad his iron fist is gone, but the businesses he set up for them still putting food on the table for someone, and the fear of his aura is still keeping the john crow out for now.

i will repeat again, you know nothing of the current situation in jamaica. The government could not stop the dons and gangsters if they tried. They have not the resources nor man-power. And if they ever tried a radication, the international community will be all over them like white on rice. if you think otherwise. We have thousands of repatriated criminals stepping off american air per year. who's going to stop them from starting their own little business.

you know how many dons run their little areas from behind bars? the former leader of the spanglers had all kinds of jail conveniences...

Neochin, there is no quick solution for Jamaica's gun happy children but we must start somewhere.

Giving some people a little smalls or some food should not rise anyone to a status where they aren't accountable when they break the law and especially when it's murder.

I am not against community leaders or dons, I am against senseless killings and ruling by the gun and murder.

Just killing and jailing the perpretrators wont stem the rise of doghearted gunmen, the whole country needs to come together and create and impliment ways and means of giving the youth and the poor something to look forward to.

Politicians obviously dont want this and the capitalists dont want to lose any of their profits to helping anybody poor.

This still shouldn't mean the rest of us should just drop arms and resign ourselves to accepting the way things are. I would seem to me that too many of us are too ready to put up with hell as long as we are OK.
