It seems that it is you who have assumed that I am speaking of Indians, or Pakis, here.
Anyway, most, if not all of them are practicing Hindus, some are from India itself, and others are from Sri Lanka, a small island of the coast of India. Quite a few of them maintain significant ties with India, marrying women from India, using Indian store clerks, etc. A number of them are illegal aliens, some of whom take advantage of a corrupt immigration system.

Until recently, their businesses were almost exclusively Indian, or I should say Hindu (since that fact is common among them), and they even intimated threats that they wanted to destroy non-Hindu businesses in Ocho Rios, fortunately they did not succeed, and I've noticed more non-Hindu involvement in their Shopping centers.

As you can see from the facts I've stated above, Hindus keep their earnings among themseleves, even within Jamaica. I suppose they have the right to determine how they use their money, but it's just that Jamaica may not be the primary beneficiary, if at all.</span>

I have seen no facts only <span style="font-family: 'Arial Black'">your assertions</span> which going by the record here should be taken with a pound of salt....in any case.....so what?
This would be a very recent occurrence and it is more a black eye on the GOJ and the natives <span style="font-style: italic">(than the Pakis, Indians or Lankan)</span>, to let others come in and eat a food in such hostile conditions while they cannot get by.

I see no problems here, the locals and their backers should have figured out their own destiny instead of whining about it.

I agree, and I still believe that St. Thomas is the poorest parish, based on previous articles and today's Gleaner article that states that &quot;based on the Planning Institute of Jamaica's (PIOJ) map of Unsatisfied Basic Needs released recently, which indicates that there are more communities in this parish where basic needs such as water, electricity, housing&quot;

The fundamental problem is the definition of &quot;poverty&quot;. They arrived at St. Ann based on the &quot;2001 population census which captures, among other data, people's ability to consume goods and services.&quot;

Poverty should not be defined as the inability to consume, it should be defined based on earnings and access to basic services.

A country built on consumption is bound to run into trouble, just look at the USA and it's fixation on consumer culture. People are more in debt today than in the 70's and the US has a negative savings rate in most studies.

The per capita earnings of the St. Thomas population vs. other parishes and the lack of access to basic services should determine poorest.

Alas, that tile means nothing because none of our parishes should be suffering lack of access to basic needs such as water, electricity and housing so it doesn't really matter who is the poorest when even the 10th poorest is still in a bad way.

I dream of a day when you say that the poorest parish in Jamaica has a standard of living like Singapore.

St Thomas is the poorest parish which is understandable. The question is why? when is is so close to Kingston. ~ To begin with, it was the only parish that did not benefit in any way from the introduction of the Railway System to Jamaica. The other factor is one which we all know, Tourism investment money never looked East or even South when they started out. Kingston was lucky to have had Myrtle Bank Hotel in Colonial times and way before hotels became fashionable in Jamaica.

The beautiful white sand beaches of the North Shore were the areas to go... There may be other factors but those two are the standouts... Sugar and agriculture in general, has always been its mainstay.

it is my understanding that post morant bay the colonial goverement underinvested in St Thomas (when compared to other parishs) and all subsequent goverement simply continued with the same proportions
