Although a number of crime fighting strategies have been discussed, I have not seen any mention of a system that involves the use of an armed citizenry. I believe that fear of retribution is a major factor why a number of persons is unwilling to assist the police. This fear could be minimized if the law-abiding citizens had the means to repell such a retaliation. A legally permitted firearm would be the ideal tool for this situation.

Firstly the government needs to repeal the Offensive Weapons Act that basically disarm the compliant citizens. Criminals do not leave their weapons at home because of the law. Instead the goverment should launch a massive campaign in educating everyone of the lawful means by which they can defend themselves from criminals. Even though the laws are on the books, most people do not access this information. I know it may not the government's business for its dissemination, but we are in a crisis.

I think the government should, even for a limited time, provide the basic training in the legal and competent use of a firearm to those who qualify. Additionally, it should set up a special program to assist same persons in acquiring the weapons at a reduced or subsidised cost, expeditiously.

With this in place, I believe there would be the likelihood of a posse being formed in every neighborhood. No longer would it be just the police detectives, with their limited knowledge of the area, that the criminal would have to be concerned about, but the neighborhood on a whole. I am sure it is time that criminals be made to be the run. Literally.

so you are sugenting that you set up neighbourhood malitia groups to protect agains invaders from outside areas and if anybody was to comitti a crime in the area they woudl have to fear swift retributions form these malitias?

i would suggest that if you take a look this system already exists in most of the worst crime ridden areas in Jamaica and is one of the reasons for the alamingly high murder rate.

i heard of one incident where gunmen entered a area and killed 3 residents..with the hour 4 people were killed in the area where the gunmen were suspected to have come from (including family of the suspected gunmen)

The ppl you describe are thugs who are armed for the purpose of self defense, primarily from their kind, and to fascilitate the carrying out of their criminal acts against the defenseless citizens. They are are obviously smart enough not to be sitting ducks.

There is no need to talk of retribution as I mentioned that ppl ought to be educated in the lawful use of weapons. Besides these are the law compliant ppl anyway, and they don't live in "areas". They live everywhere, so no need to see them as militias defending a neighborhood. They are defending their country.

I have to admit that you may be correct. When I see and read the reactions and comments of so many Jamaicans, I cannot understand how they arrive at their conclusions. See, I grew up there, migrated and returned for three years before leaving again, and all I see and hear are excuses. So, respectfully, please enlighten me as to the realities of Jamaica that prevents the citizens from taking back the country from the criminals.

I understand the point you are implying as it relates to the mentality of ppl residing in these &quot;hot spots&quot;, but I dont see how this is the determing factor for the rest of Jamaicans who wants to live, work and play, in a decent society. It seem to me that the people from these areas are more like (armed) predators preying on the (unarmed) people going about their lawful business. So I am not really concerned about what drives them, I am more concerned about what will it take for the law-abiding citizens to take a stand and even turn the tables. Even dumb animals in the wild, at some point, makes the hunter the hunted. Hence I say one strategy is to educate and arm the populace so they can defend themselves, instead of passing stupid laws which further handicaps them.

Unless they are being supervised and ordered when to ise them. thus the overwelming reliance on bigger and more armed police and military.
Uf th epopulation was wgite, that would have been the solution. The whites in jamaica are allowed ro own legal firerms without effort. So the criminals know who the vulnerable ones are and just concentrate on anhilating them.
....making sure not to attack the ones who are legally protected. Blacks are expendeble in Jamaica.

What realities did you see? The reality that I could leave and go elsewhere less fearful for my retirement, and the regular Jamaicans are stuck there like chicken in a broken coop with criminals circling and picking off the ones they desire, while the night watchman is sound asleep, or just looking the other way?

Since when guns start create division in society?

What history has taught is that during the periods of high use
of guns (war), citizens are usially more United.

Usually th eone that resist others having legal firearms have

themselves more than enough firearms, but they are fooled into

believing that greater numbers of legal gun owners does not make the whole population more secure.
