Dear Sir Ronald Sanders,

In your Sunday Observer article entitled: &quot;Venezuelan military build up cause for anxiety&quot;,you suggest that Venezuelan Premier Chavez is paranoid about is perceived &quot;US threat&quot;. May I be permitted to ask you two main questions and several derivatives:
1. What exactly,in your opinion, is the US 4th Fleet doing in the Caribbean Sea?
2. Have you ever investigated the history of US military intervention in South America and the Caribbean from the end of the 19th Century,and are you not aware of the well-publicized US backed attempt to overthrow the democratically elected Mr. Chavez not so long ago?

Also , don't you think your speculation about how his own people will respond to him, is a bit out of place for a non-Venezuelan like yourself? If you are one of those non-Americans who believe in the &quot;American shield&quot; and the &quot;Munroe Doctrine&quot; why not straightforwardly say so and present your reasons?

Thank you very much for taking the time and trouble to write to me about my commentary on Chavez's military build up.
Contrary to the obvious assumptions that you have made and which are not contained in my commentary, I am not a supporter of the hegemonic behaviour of the US in Latin American in the Caribbean. Indded, all of my writings on US foreign policy in the region is highly critical of all US administrations - Republican and Democrat.

My &quot;speculation&quot; as you put it about how &quot;his own people will respond to him&quot; is not speculation at all; it is based on the situation on the ground in Venezuela. If everyone who wrote about a country or its leader had to be one of the leader's people, very little writing would be done except to fawn at the feet of the idol.

Chavez poses no danger to the US; indeed he has helped George W Bush's otherwise atrocious standing in the US and the world by his excessives utterances and behaviour. He is a greater threat to neighbouring countries in South America and the Caribbean. On that basis, I will continue to raise my voice in warning against him.

Thanks again for writing; it caused me to think even more deeply about the subject.

I Google Sir Ronald Sanders and got this biography.
It seems the objectivity of the man is more than a bit offset by his strong history in capitalist eneterprises which would automatically render him a Chavez opponent.

Sir Ronald Michael Sanders has been a member of ICC’s board of directors since the company’s inception. He also served as consultant to the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States. He served on the board of directors of the Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company from 1991-1997. A former Visiting Fellow at Oxford University, he is the author of several publications on small states in the international political economy.
His career also includes being managing director of the Guyana Broadcasting Service and public affairs adviser to the president of the Caribbean Development Bank in Barbados.Sir Ronald helped establish and was a president of the Caribbean Broadcasting Union. He also served on the first board of directors of the Caribbean News Agency (CANA), now the Caribbean Media Corporation (CMC). He was educated at Boston University and the University of Sussex and has an M.A. in international relations. Mr Gong, two things, although Sir Ronald Sanders did not agree with my questions, he obviously recognised them to be serious enough not only to e-mail me a reply but more importantly to make him retire to &quot;think even more deeply about the subject&quot;. Facts are Mr Gong US notorious interevention in the region is well known to all BUT what evidence is there of Venezuelan &quot;danger&quot; as asserted by Sir Ronald? He did not provide any, are you saying that you,Mr Gong have such documentation?

Tuff Gong,as I said everybody knows the history of US military invasions in the region against governments they did not agree with. Venezeula under Mr Chavez is one such country the US is oppsed to.<span style="font-weight: bold">As you know the US have already tried to everthrow, via a coup, a democratically elected Chavez govt. </span>

<span style="font-weight: bold">Now, Mr Chavez says he believes that the US will try to overthrow his govt and because of this he bought military hardware to prevent this. What is wrong with that Tuff Gong?</span> Mr Sanders seems to think this action of Chavez somehow poses a &quot;danger&quot; to the Caribbean.Why? That is all I am asking, why?
