Seriously speaking, JAMAICA has been thrusted into the glare of the international spotlight. We are beeing looked at and studied like never before. How are we going to hold up after such severe scrutiny as to "what makes us tick". Long after the games are over and in a relatively short time it will become little more than a memory but what they have learnt will linger with them. Are the rest of the world, meaning those that are not yet fully aware of our problems of Crime and our high Murder rate be added to those already aware?

Will this knowledge further add to our already negative image abroad? I raised this question in the hope that our collective voices will get through to the powers that be, that if they are "smart" they can use our success in this Olympic to start the process with the help of our Olympians to combat Crime in Jamaica. How about our government comming up with plans to turn young and future criminals towards the "Olympic Persuit" by enlisting Bolt and some of the others in such a venture.

The symbolism would be so powerful it would be difficult not to reach the kids from Negril Pt. to Morant Pt. who would do ANYTHING just to look at BOLT or even touch him, the same for our female athletes as well... Could this ever be tried in JA?? Do we have the will to exploit the value of this Olympic in marshalling our idle youths away from crime? I suspect that whatever we do, money and affordability comes to the fore. The question is, can we afford not to??

has not been solved is because th emajoroty of the educated Jamaicans, both in Jamaica and abroad are igniorant about what really secures a country.
They are comparing Jamaica now wit Jamaica 40 uears aho. Instead of comparinmg th edevelopement stage of Jamaica after independence and the same stage of cpountries that are noy neasrly crime free.
These educated people do not know that countries like the US

went through worst crime rates than Jamaica 200 yaers ago.


Not because that aspect of US history os not readily taught in high schools, don't mean that they shouldn't be rtesearching it.

The problem is urgent and a reat enough threat to the existence of the country


They also do not realize that the country had to make it mandatory that citizens had to be armed.

What they did was to create a large volunteer police force.
Whoever do not have th eguts to live an a country in which th emajority is armed. better leave the US.

Because it is not the police that keep the from erate down in the low crime areas.

It is the knowledge of criminals that they will be shot if they attempt ot in those certain places.

This is not rocket science. but it is not common sense either. It is a cience based on measurable data.

Dudd, I think you are comparing Apples and Oranges in looking at the situation. How can you compare the Wild West situation of the US 200 years ago with the tiny island of Jamaica that had been a colonial outpost of the British for over 300 years? ~ What made you think that it was inevitable that Jamaica should follow a course that as you suggested, many others took when the circumstances of their origins were completely different. You seem to be saying that the current Crime in Jamaica is part and parcel of our development stage and we should arm ourselves and live with it...

If that is the case, what stage are we heading towards next? I dont think following and impementing the US system has ever been the method that suited Jamaica or any former colonial teritory for that matter... If that was the case why is it that Barbados, Singapore and Bermuda to name a few did not chose the &quot;wild west route&quot; to their development and success? They did not IMPORT it and they seem to be doing fine. FYI, Jamaica was never a place that was pre-disposed to become the violent place it is today. What we have was IMPORTED. What the Americans had and are having is their &quot;development&quot; alien to what we had...
