It's very interesting that PM Golding called on local criminals to "stop embarrassing Jamaica" in the wake of Jamaica's olympic achievements. Mr Golding has aimed at the wrong target. The real target is the very source of the criminality - Jamaica's corrupt leaders, the mainstay of local crime.

It is not street criminals who set up armed Garrisons,get elected to parliament,hand out bogus "contracts" to party dons to "keep them sweet",arganise lucrative "kickbacks" and "cost over-runs" all of which facilitate crime across the nation.

Mr Golding would be better advised to address his "call" to Jamaica's leaders because they are at the root of the "embarassment". His very Minister of Sport Babsy Grange is the person who police discovered to have bought a brand new car, as a Christmas present for a notorious party don, not so long ago.</span>

DNV, I appreciate your fervour in trying to get our leaders past and present to take full responsibility in the roles they played in making Jamaica the "murder capital" of the world in such a short period of time... Golding, unfortunately is tied to predecessors from both parties who were at the helm of the "ship of state" while they allowed crime and murder to grow and prosper, while most Jamaicans cringe and cower under the onslaught of criminality and political gang warfare. However, he has accepted the mantle not only to lead but to change things for the better. After 18 do nothing years of the last govt, it's a very tall order...

You are partly right when you say that Golding in the wake of the success of our athletes is aiming his remarks at the wrong target. To be taken seriously, he needed to be more inclusive by admiting and accepting much of the blame on behalf of his predecessors and tell the country that he will try his very best to reverse the trend...I see nothing wrong with aiming at local CRIMINALS. They are now the foot soldiers creating the carnage and mayhem that must be laid at the feet of both political parties... Will he seize the opportunity to marshall the positive effects from our athletes to fight against our local Crime? ~ Time will tell...

The GOJ of Jamaica when in power holds all the strings. The PNP Government was in power for 18 years and did nothing but allow murder to rise from a low on 400+ under the JLP to over 1500+ per year.

The JLP has just been in power for less than a year so they cannot be responsible for a rise in crime, what they can be responsible for is their idiotic response to the problem. We must get the argument right.

The history of Jamaica since Independence will show that every time the PNP has formed the Government, murders and crime has risen well above all the previous records and when the JLP forms the Government the reverse is true. Gelding is in danger of mashing up the JLP record.

Got any statistics on that.

I would bet that the difference in murders/crimes of violence/all crime is not significantly different regardless of which party holds office.

The government of any country can't really effect crime rates without practically declaring martial law and putting police and military on every corner.

Crime is the result of poverty.

No government in Jamaica can or will change the poverty situation since they are, at least, part of the cause.

You cannot end poverty and the despair, gang membership , drug use, violence etc that goes with poverty unless you change the means of distribution of the goods and services available in the society and since both parties are devoted to capitalism I would have to guess that murder and crime will continue at or near the present rates.

Partly and the PNP ensured that Jamaica was mired in poverty during the 70s, late 80s, 90s and 2K, no wonder crime rose dramatically in all their terms since the 70s.

So you blame this on <span style="font-family: 'Arial Black'">Capitalism?</span>
The PNP tried both Socialism and Capitalism and Crime went through the roof.
Singapore, Bahamas, Trinidad, Barbados, Japan, Cayman, Bermuda etc are Capitalist Countries and the crime rate in these Jurisdictions are no where near the high rate per capita as Jamaica.
Even Haiti does not have high a crime and murder rate <span style="font-style: italic">(outside of political strife)</span> that Jamaica has.

Yes Mr Gong,but while both parties are responsible for the crime escalation and most particularly under that PJ -see no evil-hear no evil-Patterson, it was Seaga who incited that maass slaughter of over 800 people in 1980 to get himself elected, that started this massive,continuous wave that the PNP under Patterson presided over.

Mr Gong don't forget that everybody knows that it was Seaga's forces who tried to assassinate Bob Marley to try to stop him organising that "peace concert" to get the PNP/JLP to stop the killings. <span style="font-weight: bold">Do you not agree Mr Gong or do you think it was the work of a deranged "lone gunman" by the name of Lee Harvey Oswald?</span></span>
