Is here in Edmonton and western Canada for the past week or so he made a short speech at the Jamaican association Marcus Garvey Centre last evening after which he invited the audience to ask 3 questions as he had an engagement to attend a function
Well 2 hours later he was on his way....What's with the 2 colour hair?

So Remo what were some of the questions asked?

was there a heated debate?

What is he offering in terms of labour to the Alberta Govt?

Did he address the issue of why the Ja. migrant farm worker is now persona non grata in Ont?

He was the first minister who would get on the a public show in Jamaica and answer issues on phone in programs. and then do something about problems. He was the man who tried his damndest to fix roads ect as Minister of works. After the high handed manner and ineffectiveness of the cliche spouters it was refreshing...

When you think of all this guy and Jamaicans whom he had tried to represent has gone through. First Portia and her gang wiped out a whole community just to get the Constituency. Then they locked him up for a year for absolutely no reason but he was a Labourite, at one point during his incarnation his wife who was forced to leave Jamaica with their young ones was on her death bed and he begged to go see her before she passed away, even in handcuffs and Michael Menlie and his blood thirsty crew refused to allow the man even that small wish!

When yu si fool-fool peple write all kinds a madness pon BB and want to lie and spin the truth, these are the bloody chapters of our past that they are really trying to hide!

There were many good questions ranging from remittance home to the death
penalty ...No the ontario issue did not come up...HE said they are training tens of thousands of jamaicans for jobs over seas,Electricans,Welders,Chef's
etc....

The debate did get a bit heated when the death penalty came up
interestingly enough the audience was split 50/50 for and against

Those of us against didn't think it is a deterent and the possibility of an innocent person being put to death.....
He conceded it was not a deterent but given the outrageous murder rate in jamaica he would be willing to as he put it [If 10 murderers were killed by the state and 1 was innocent he could live with that]..He was very forceful on that point....

I recall just before I left yard on my oddessy that Pernel had become more powerful and popular than Seaga... He was given the posion chalise of the Minister of Works... He was in charge opf the JPS, most roads (PWD), Water... At the time he did something other ministers never did.. He admitted his limitations.. If there was a major thing wron he would address it...

It is hard to explain what Pernel did if you had not been there... At the time Ministers would polticise and demonstrate that things were better... I cant forget how the PNP told us we never had it so good while they imported poision flour... They blamed every body but themselves. Pernel grabbed the nettle, admitted his responsibility and set out to fix..

Now looking back he probably made the same mistake as Garvey did tried to assume his vision alone was correct and micromanage... But an incident when he picked up the phone and called Ronnie Thwaites on the radio who was talking to some poor woman who had been threatehened by the Water department petty officals who were demanding bribes to do their jobs. And his righteous anger was a reflection of how I felt and that he did not offer standard banalities, truism or poltical slogans.. He addressed the issue.

His actions basically showed that his function was to serve us rather than him being important. Bear in Mind Thaiwtes a more than simple supporter of the PNP he admitted that it was refreshing to have someone who showed his concern through actions and communicated...

The PNP imported Flour and whatever they need to hand out, just like Cuban Bulbs etc.
