JIS CEO given walking papers

Senior officials in the Bruce Golding administration who presided over Wednesday's post cabinet press briefing denied knowledge of the sudden dismissal of Chief Executive Officer of the Jamaica Information Service (JIS) Huntley Medley.
Minister in Charge of the Public Service Dwight Nelson said he was unaware that Mr. Medley was sacked by the Public Service Commission overnight.
Huntley Medley a 25 year veteran journalist was at the helm of the government's main communication arm-JIS up until Tuesday night.
He was informed by way of a letter delivered Tuesday that his two year contract which began in March 2007 has been terminated with immediate effect.
Minister in charge of the Public Service Dwight Nelson, who presided over the post Cabinet press briefing, denied knowledge that Mr. Medley was axed.
But Mr. Medley issued a statement Wednesday indicating that he was given marching orders.
In the release, the outgoing JIS Head said he decided to issue a public statement as the sudden development did not afford him the opportunity to properly advise the agency's staff, clients and stakeholders of his departure.
A source told RJR news that he was blamed for widely reported logistical problems with the government's celebrations for the Beijing, Olympic Team.
Some insiders say the Information Ministry complained regularly about the performance of the Agency in publicising the work of the Government.
Sources say it was just a matter of time that the administration would sack Mr. Medley who served as a Press Secretary to former Prime Minister and PNP president PJ Patterson.
