Major fraud at NHT
Thursday, 09 October 2008
Detectives from the Fraud Squad are probing a multi-million dollar racket at the National Housing Trust (NHT).
Head of the Fraud Squad Deputy Superintendent Colbert Edwards told the RJR News Centre that his department was called in last week by the management of the NHT.
DSP Edwards did not give any details, but sources close to the case says "desperate" house seekers have been fleeced of millions of dollars by an employee at the Trust.
That employee, a female, was suspended by the NHT in March but she has since disappeared.
It's reported that over a period of time, persons seeking housing solutions built by the NHT paid the employee millions of dollars to put them at the top of the list of persons to get houses.
They were told by the employee that the NHT houses were going fast and that they should pay her to help them.
However, the employee failed to deliver on her promise.
Persons who paid large sums of money became worried and reported the matter to the NHT.
The NHT conducted an investigation which found that in one instance, a man paid two million dollars to the employee.
Sources told the RJR New Centre that the racket involves more than ten million dollars.
The NHT and the police have collected statements from alleged victims.
