years ago, some celebrated the notoriety that the book brought...some even thought that it would have a positive impact on the island..how 'notoriety' could mean anything positive shows how the word is mis-used more and more

juss which areas of life were to be positively impacted, has always been up to which side of the coin u were positioned...at anyrate, a whole new industry was born

now we r seeing a steadfast decline in how women on the whole , r being regarded....we have gone from the unwanted whistling to the forcing of attention on women, when in the past, an ignored whistle usually brought out just the wit of the whistler...after all he had to save face in light of being ignored by the whisle-ee...quick repartee was his weapon then...

granted, encounters between the visitor and the visited were always there since the advent of tourism but there was a marked and calculated difference in the post book and movie publication

so, is the claim a valid one...has Stella helped to derail Ja's groove

can't really blame stella;
not if you see what sometimes goes on in modern day dancehall...the only thing left for them to do is to actually have sex in the dance and film it...

Sexual tourism is indeed taking JA on a downward spiral. However, Stella & her groove did not cause it. It's all part of a global trend from E. Europe to the Caribbean, Latin America, and Asia. It comes from cheap and easy air travel being readily available to people who don't know any better than to exploit others who they were like just a few short years ago.

They've done that. Haven't you ever viewed the tapes? All dignity has been out the window long before Stella, but SHE has intensified the meat-market mentality for those who were not able to find &quot;_________&quot; in their home countries.

This is a sad but true fact. Especially in the past two years, there have been an increase in violence agains women in Jamaica. It used to be that when you hear about a shooting in the news, the victim was usually a young male. Now that's no longer the case. Victims of violence are women, children, the elderly, and even newborns. Gunman tek set pon di whole a wi. &lt;kissteet&gt;

Here's an article explaining what drives men to rape. Stella and sex tourism got nothing to do with it. Although I didn't like the light in which the movie presented Jamaica.

Now mi a man an mi nuh really business wid a wah gwaan wid farrin woman when dem go a Yard. But just by personal observation and from reading what used to be posted on Jamaicans.com trip reports in the years before the movie came out, it would seem as though the movie was a reflection of what was already happening, and not the other way around.

stella has nothing to do with any of it...

a private person going on vacation who hooks up with a local and brings him back home with her is the exception not the rule;
we have no one to blame but our own selves for the slackness culture many of us now consider to be cute

u do know di movie came out in '98 an di book in '96 an mi dblchk an hear di site stawted '95...now we know dat people always did a get dem groove awn, but the airing of it in a full length movie signified a change ....is like how, wid di advent of satellite dish, our culture got a jolt dat was not onehundredvoltsofJohnHolt, but less desirable volts an the change is in the fact, that wat was once done unda di cova is now an open sore... the thinking on the pawt of Jcans took a turn for the worse as we lost some of our British reserve an went wid di anyting goes....it is hard to tell children to not view sex an relationships as avenues to money etc wen it is all they r exposed to...it is via videos, and the actual behaviour of people around dem...i can memba how we looked down on boops an chastised dem fi dat behaviour....now look where we r....an anyone who denies dat people used di movie, not the book , but di movie as dem cawling card to finding out bout yaad, is not being honest....dere was nuff winking an nodding wid di arranged trips to yaad to try to echo Stella....

Elderly men sentenced for human trafficking

Despite pleas from defence lawyers for a non-custodial sentence, two elderly men were yesterday each sentenced to 12 months' imprisonment for conspiracy to trafficking in persons involving a 14-year-old girl.

In sentencing 55-year-old woodcrafter Agon Stephens and 57-year-old businessman Narcot Graham, both of Kingston addresses, Supreme Court judge Horace Marsh stressed that the offence was very serious.

&quot;How would you feel if your daughter was the complainant?&quot; the judge asked the men, who said they were the fathers of several children, including daughters.

The men were the first persons to be charged in Jamaica with trafficking in persons. They pleaded guilty on Monday in the Home Circuit Court to the lesser offence of conspiracy to trafficking in persons.

<span style="font-weight: bold">Plans for prostitution</span>
Lisa Palmer, acting senior deputy director of public prosecutions, in outlining the facts of the case, said in May 2006, Graham and Stephens made plans to get the girl involved in prostitution.

<span style="font-weight: bold">The men approached an investigator from New Zealand who was in the island to conduct research into sexual exploitation and trafficking of women and children.</span>

<span style="font-weight: bold">They told the man that they could get a young girl for him to have sexual intercourse with, but he would have to pay them US$400.</span>

The money was paid to the men and the investigator reported the matter to the police. A sting operation was set up and on May 24, 2006, when the men turned up with the girl in the New Kingston area, the police swooped down and arrested and charged them.

They were found with the US$400 in their possession.

Defence lawyers Lloyd McFarlane and Lynden Wellesley pleaded with the judge not to send the men to prison.

The lawyers pointed out that the men had spent nine months in custody before they were granted bail.

The judge said he took into account the fact that the men had pleaded guilty, but insisted that they had to spend time in prison.
