Madagascar is battling to contain an outbreak of a plague, which started in August and has killed 47 people, AFP reported Nov. 26. The disease, which is related to bubonic plague, appears to be spreading to the slums of the capital, Antananarivo. According to World Health Organization sources, health workers mounted a pest control campaign through slum areas around the city to try to halt the spread of the sickness. The plague is not new to Madagascar and recurs annually. However, a WHO spokesman said the U.N. health agency is particularly concerned about this outbreak because the number of cases of plague appears to be higher than in recent years.
