Surely the government can't be expected to raise children? The government can't keep the roads. Government can't provide schools or hospitals, and now we expect them to raise kids?

Last week I heard a statistic about the prison population in the US that floored me... 80% of the people in prison have been through the foster care system. Link

Probably Im missing something, but I think children need love to grow up, and government cant give love, or pay someone to give love to children.

But I agree that the problem is huge, global, and getting worse.

Why insinuate that the author of the piece or the topic starter implied that government is in the business of raising children or capable of giving love? How absurd !! To put it mildly, it would be fallacious to argue such. ::LOL::

Thank God government is<span style="font-weight: bold"> NOT</span> in the business of raising children, for should that be the case, there would be not one child left alive, anywhere.

If, if, if, you are/were familiar with this particular problem in KINGSTON JAMAICA which is where the interview was conducted and the problem proliferates, you'd be crying in your cereal too.

I know the problem... and I read the article. It seems that Blacka has suffered from a lack of family... and LOVE.

Although "orphans" are not mentioned in the article as a cause for homelessness in children, no doubt there are some orphans in need of homes too.

Britisha has told us that this problem has been going on for donkey years in Jamaica, and she wonders what is the government going to do about it? I don't think it is the governments problem. I don't think good government can stop it from happening, and they can't help the children out that become homeless.

I also think that foster care, like they have in the U.S. is a total disaster. Foster care parents are paid money to care for children that are orphaned or their parents lose their children for countless reasons. 80% of people in the criminal justice system were also in the foster care system.

But let's just think about Blacks for a minute. Here is a twenty year old young man who was abandoned by his mother, and all relatives. Who grew up in a series of boys' homes where he was shamed and beaten. He ran away, and lived homeless for years being a thief. Then he got shot. Now he cleans windshields for handouts at a red light in Kingston. Imagine we could spend all the money needed to turn Blacks into a well adjusted family man. What could we do for him?

That is goiung to be difficult. He did not grow in Foster homes. He frew up in Bous home. Those are prisonlike instititions that are really no better than prisons.
Go he to benefit from outside help, he will have tp have a goal.
What did he say his goal was?/
It is not going to be easy for him nor his benefactors.
The middlemen will be the problem..

Homelessness is tied directly to poverty.

It is also tied to broken homes in economies in which single parents often cannot afford to take care of their several children when they lose their partners.

It is also tied to lack of community support for one another in dog-eat-dog, poor crime-ridden societies where everyone is forced to look out for themselves.

It doesn't happen in Cuba; the one Third World country that has a socialist economy; a country where all man is one man and all receive what they need to become fully developed people: all the necessities of life and the love of one's compatriots.

Of course I realize that in Jamaica, socialism has been demonized amongst the citizenry and it's possibility of being voted in made impossible by the dictatorship of the rabid twin parties of capitalism (JLP and PNP) but just look at what we're missing by foolishly sticking to what has NEVER worked.

College scholarship reductions = zero (actually college enrollment went up and all were accommodated).

Number of people who lost their health care coverage = zero (neighborhood clinics increased and Cuba graduated more Drs per capita than any other nation).

And this went on under a so called "dictatorship". Just look at what America (Jamaica- my inclusion) is going through in (not so) hard times with our "freedom".

What about affordable housing for these children and their parents

Apprenticeship programmes where these youths can go and learn a trade/skill resulting in them becoming income earners..

Initiate compulsory/mandatory education for all children up to the age of 18 [instead of 15 as before in elementary schools)? etc etc

I was telling my mom yesterday about an article I read in the Observer where these young men from Gordon Town or Irish Town was begging for someone to give them a jump start on raising chicken and planting vegetables because they did not want to get into politices.

I wonder if anyone responded to them

All laudable and nessesary.... However there is a cost implication.... where would the resources come from ???? Expand the tax base, collect the GCT tax, tax all incomes, propety tax.... ??? As much as 70% of Jamaicans income does not actually get taxed.... why should they pay if they dont get the benifit ????
