A senior member of the police force has added his voice to the debate on whether more Jamaicans should be granted gun licences.
Superintendent in charge of the St. Catherine South Division, Marlon Nesbeth, says guns oftentimes end up in the wrong hands and have contributed to personal tragedies.
However, Superintendent Nesbeth says Jamaicans should be given the right to be armed to secure their person and property.
"Some persons are of the view that if you arm the general pubic the would be better able to take care of themselves and to an extent, it would have some merit to it but one would have to ask a critical question- arm who?
"Every member of the public can't be allowed licenced firearms because we've seen some of them who've not been properly vetted commit breaches of the law with the same guns. These sometime include family situations," Superintendent Nesbeth said.
