I was thinking of posting this earlier after reading in the Ja Gleaner.

I can see the point as there is a huge asset out their in the form of the resources that many diasporean JA's have achieved., but perhaps they need to make it more palatable - like say Ghana has encouraged with many of it's citizens.

Offering jobs in certain areas, self start investment opportunities (outside of tourism PLEASE) for those Ja passport holders, or those that can prove direct linkages, tax incentives for returning Jamaican to employer other Jamaicans, I think this is a very good source to tap into so the country can benefit - we all will benefit from the growth.

Remittances can only do so much, and those who have left and have skills that they can offer, should do so.

What is the use of a deposit insurance that only guarantees US$2,000?
Is that the limit of their respect of the security of our funds? I mean that is 2 months rent in St Andrew.
You mean they underestimate our respect for our own financial security?
I think most of use left for financial security. they expect that if we did that when we were much younger, we would be likely to be less concerned about the security of our funds?
They seem to be offering the same thing we ran from and expected us to change our minds and take it at this state of our lives. It does not make any sense. If they expect tyo get thongs done without money they hav eno right to be leadingpeople. And if they expect us to do things without thinking about th esecuroty of our money thegthaveno right to even ask.
If they expect things tohappen theybetter get their systems in place, because most of us are not going to risk all like gambling addicts.

I hear what you are saying - the system as it is there, one cannot expect the same level of assurances that you would in a first world country - facing the facts - it IS a developing country.

I think that it is good that there already is a level of deposit insurance, albeit substantially less than in the US or UK, personally I don't think that Ja Govnmnt can afford to offer more, and shouldn't as (especially with a climate such as the current) there is potential there to overstretct or even 'break' it's resources).

Looking at Ja now, I do see that it is a major financial investment risk, and any liquidity will be kept abroad for that reason. Many global corporations already do this in order to avoid higher tax regimes. Personally I would do the same (keep funds abroad).

But it does not alter the fact that in establishing businesses - benefit will still be had when funds are remitted for salaries, wages, and thereby taxes in the country, so the wealth is applied in return hopefully for profit.

In time once the economy becomes more prosperous, then trust will build and in time can work out better safeguards so that the deposits can be held locally.
Note that I am not in favour of any direct (bonds, or whatever) with the Ja Government, but applying it to business startups, branch expansions or corporate relocations (although this is almost 'pie-in-the-sky' until the crime gets under control).

we been asking peeps in the diaspora to come home fi how long now...but wat is it that we want from them...again i say, we love to tawk about education our people ourside of di island to be able to utilise that wich we paying 'consultants' fah

so how come, how many years past the Independence returnees, we not seeing any nationalistic value of wat we keep asking fah

so peeps sen dem money home...how has dat helped? really helped the island an mi no really wan fi hear bout how families r fed..to dat i say, sen a WU an dem nyam fi di duration of dat money etc etc

wat will change the type of attitudes wich do not utilise the real asset of a diasporan..and wat r those assets really dat we want to encourage to come home and wat in place to put dem to good use etc etc

all dem conferences etc, wat really we seeing apart from some peep ha more to pump dem rep up bout etc etc etc....increased remittances is the ongle sign of success fi dem everlasting calls fi help from di diaspora?

</div></div> It is nit inaffordable fot weven a under developed country toi afford Re-insurance tisupport a reasonable deposiot insurance. afterall it is passed on to the depositors ain th eform of reduced earnings. It is simply not seen as important tio them. Afterall they have beenb suffering because if this inhth eform of local currency deoreciation for ever. They simply do not know the appropriate tools to achieve stabillity. They are acting on themyth that it is expprt that will be th etool. It does not happen if the country export billions, there are many African countries that export much more than Jamaica and hs very low imports too.
Yet they have no international reserves,and a low exchange rate.
It is all about where people feel secure leaving their deposit,followed by the earnings on it.
If they make that one change, In a few years they won't need Jamaican expatriates to stimulate the economy. Jamaica had a negative net international resesrves since independence until the 90's.
even during the socalled prosperous years it had net international reserves. it only bought onlines of credit and whatever little foreign currency they could get. It had the highest foreign reserves during theperiod of negative growth. Youy go figure.
yet these socalled financial wizards don't erven see the falacy of the logic in their theory.
