Nah,

It was Manley's fault.

He should have known that the Jamaican people would not back him when he challenged the United States by allying himself with Cuba and bringing in Cuban doctors, engineers, raising the bauxite levies to help finance things needed in Jamaica in the middle of the U.S. -Soviet Cold War in which the United States had crushed all would-be socialist states in the hemisphere (except Cuba).

Had he kissed up the the United States he would have served largely untroubled by the created shortages of rice and oil, the cutting off of IMF and other loan sources and the importing of huge numbers of weapons by and from the United States.

Manley created the need for the United States to destabilize the country and Edward Seaga, ever faithful to the same principals that drive U.S. policies and the Empire, got back the loans (doubling the debt like his pal Reagan in the U.S.) and got the rice and oil back on the shop shelves.

I guess that leaves the sticky problem of all the guns and all the killing since 1979-80 and the decline of civility in Jamaica.

Well, two out of three isn't bad.

I remember while I was just a small yute when a couple of the cuban nurses stayed with us in our home. My mother was a nurse and the nurses were lovely people from what I remember.

However, the problem with Manley I think re the usa came about when he made that speech that he will not bow to the usa and the usa cannot dictate to him who and who he should be friends with or have as allies with jamaica. This would have made the usa sat and pay close attention on Manley and focusing their intelligence more acutely on the island in case jamaica became a &quot;threat&quot; to america or aligned herself with cuba. Looking at the map of the caribbean I think america would definitely have something to say about any such alliance with cuba.

</div></div> It actually came about long before. It came about when he start charging more for the Bauxite and Alumina. Revere Alumina shut down their plant and never reopened it. Alcoa and Reynolds close too. The bauxite companies stopped exporting Jamaica bauxite and Jamaica had ti take control of the plants. manley also took posession of all the bauxiet lands and leased it to them instead. That is what the Americans were mad about. They don't care what you say if they can take you for a fool. It is all about the green backs. every policy that the US follow is about the greens.They will label it as humanitarian or democracy and all manner of nice sounding names. But don;t be fooled It is all about the MULA.
