As I stated so many times. The effects of slavery and colonialism, is not a past experience in Jamaica.
It is a continuing experience.
It is still there camouflaged as everything else, but it is still there.
Slavery and colonialism has been and still is about economic domination.
Whatever they claim you are suppose to be enjoying, if the experience is the same.
nothing has changed.
it is all about promise, but not action.
It is with them 24 hours for as long as it has been.
Western movies on the other hand have been offered as a distraction from reality.

Jamaicans actually know the difference between distraction and reality.

all movies r made to distract people MOMENTARILY...the argument here is that some have taken them to heart and r aping wat they have seen on them...the further argument is that that assessment is akin to ur assessment that slavery n colonialism continue to influence present behaviour....

it doesnt matter wat the source is, the fact of importance is the continued influence,both (slavery n western movies)of wich r negative

The influence of pop culture on youths is generational. To me, Jcans following westerns is more comparable to white Americans in the goth movement or neo-Nazis who think Hitler was a genius. Taken to their extremes, all of those movements lead to violence against peers or those perceived as &quot;other&quot;.

Slavery and colonialism is different something altogether IMO.

I dont think it`s comparable,I think it`s a different thing alltogether,Hitler was a real person,not a film star,and I am sure he must have been a very clever leader to have inspired so many of his people,so those who think he was a genius are not entirely wrong.


However,following westerns and ultra violent flicks are one thing,but when people are influenced and inspired by these movies then that is a worrying trend,traditionally the youth of jamaica has always looked on the western genre and the stars as heroes,.....this was very evident in &quot;the harder they come&quot;.

Modern movies are far more violent than the westerns of yesteryear,and if Jamaican youths are influenced by movies to such extent that they copy their &quot;heroes&quot; and see them as role models.......then that is a failing of the society,either it is lacking in sufficient role models,or the youths are lacking in proper guidance,...or both.
