REAR Admiral Hardley Lewin yesterday resigned as police commissioner with immediate effect</span>, six days after appearing before the Cabinet to address rising concerns that the police are unable to check the country's spiralling crime rate.
Lewin... contract would have come to an end next October.
Lewin's decision was confirmed last evening by Daryl Vaz, the minister with responsibility for information, who said that Prime Minister Bruce Golding had informed a retreat of the ruling Jamaica Labour Party, earlier yesterday.
"There were concerns that the police force was not doing enough to deal with the crime situation in the country," said Vaz. "It was therefore a concern about the administration of crime and what the results were showing."
